First Day of School

The first day of school is an exciting and often emotional time for both parents and children.

Nesbit School starts every morning with a schoolwide gathering.  Children will line up by teacher (signs will be posted) so knowing your child's teacher ahead of time will be useful.  Parents should expect the first week of Morning Gathering to be highly attended.  Therefore, preparing your child to know that there will be many, many parents and adults attending Morning Gathering the first week of school is helpful.  Parents are strongly suggested to bring their children to school on the first day and stay with them through Morning Gathering because the high volume of people in attendance can be intimidating to a little one.  As the school year progresses, high volumes of parents attending will be greatly minimized and Morning Gathering will become a very manageable place for your child to attend on their own.

After Morning Gathering dismissal, parents are welcomed to follow their children to the classroom.  Follow your teacher's lead as to when is the best time to leave.  When you leave (even if your child is crying hard), please do so quickly and confidently.  We have found that hesitant parents or parents who take a long time to leave actually work to increase tears in children.  Therefore, leaving quickly and confidently with a reassuring, "I love you and can't wait to hear all about your day!" will help to instill in your child your confidence that will have a remarkable day in kindergarten.

Teachers are very accessible to parents via email.  Additionally, requests for conferences are always welcomed.  Please do not share important information with your child's teacher at the start of the school day as the classroom teacher often has a multitude of children to attend to at this time.  An email or phone call to voice mail is the best way to communicate these important messages.

All classrooms also have Shutterfly accounts and this is an easy way to stay in touch with what is happening in school.

On Mondays, homework folders are sent home.

On Wednesdays, the Wednesday packet is also sent home.

Join Nesbit PTA's facebook page (search for Nesbit Elementary) or follow Nesbit on twitter (@nesbitpumas) as other ways to stay informed.

Welcome new families!

Summer Preparation for TK

* At Home -- Read, read, read, read all through summer

* Attend Kindergarten playdates (see front page of website for dates and times)

* Attend Nesbit's Mobile Library Days (see front page of website for dates and times)

* Have your child meet their teacher at Kindergarten Meet and Greet the day before school starts

* Practice counting with your child both out loud as well as counting specific items.

* Practice having your child write their name using both uppercase and lower case letters.

* Check out Belmont Library's Summer Library programs.

* Sing lots of songs!

* Minimize electronics and get your child moving!

Parents are strongly encouraged to volunteer in the classroom.  Classroom volunteers enables the class to work in small groups which enhances learning for all children.  Please check in with your child's teacher s to the best days and times to volunteer.  In order to volunteer in the classroom, parents need to complete the Volunteer Clearance process as well as submit a cleared TB test every 4 years.

* TKs will read or be read-to 15-20 minutes per night every day of the week including weekends and vacations.

* A weekly homework packet will also be sent home.

* The MOST important homework is the reading.

At the end of the day, teachers will open the classroom door and children will be allowed to leave once the teacher has made eye contact with the adult responsible for pick up.  Please wait for the classroom door to open as opposed to entering the room.  If the classroom door is already open but children are still in their closing circle with the teacher, please wait outside.  Children going to the after-school program at the end of the day will be picked up by after-school staff members.
