The dates given may be subject to change so please consult the weekly fliers sent home in the Wednesday envelopes to keep up to date on any changes.
Nesbit School’s Vision
Nesbit School seeks to create a safe, nurturing and respectful learning environment where diversity is valued. To achieve this vision, Nesbit students, parents, and staff work collaboratively to help students acquire a solid academic foundation, build strong character, resolve conflicts, develop confidence, set and achieve challenging goals, communicate effectively, and develop a love of learning.
General Information
Office Hours
The office opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 4:30 p.m.
School Spirit
Nesbit’s mascot is the Puma. Our school colors are teal and black. Every Monday is Spirit Day and students are encouraged to wear school colors or shirts (available from the PTA). The first Friday of each month is Recycle Day. Students are encouraged to bring in recycling to help the environment and raise money for the school.
Monday Morning Meetings
Each Monday, the entire school community gathers together to salute the flag, hear announcements, acknowledge birthdays, and recognize achievements. Life skills such as Respect, Responsibility, and Caring are discussed. Parents are welcomed to attend this all school event.
Nutrition
Parents are responsible for sending students to school with a nutritious lunch and snack. Students may not bring junk food such as candy and soda.
Lunch Program
Milk is available for purchase through the district. Hot food will be available for purchase through the PTA. Free and reduced-priced lunches are available to children whose families qualify. Please contact the school for more information.
Healthy Classroom Celebrations
Many parents like to bring in a food treat to celebrate their child’s birthday. To help us have healthy classroom celebrations throughout the year that follow the district’s Wellness Policy, please bring in foods and snacks that are lower in sugar, fat and calories. Instead, please bring in foods that are high in nutrition that will enable your child to do their very best while in school. Foods to not bring for celebrations include cupcakes with frosting, candy, cakes, and other high in sugar foods. Instead, bring in foods such as 100% fruit popsicles or bars, fruit kabobs, frozen yogurts, mini-bags and cream cheese, fruit trays, popcorn, veggies, angel food cake with fruit, trail mix, graham crackers, apple sauce, tube yogurts and baked tortilla chips with salsa.
You may also choose to celebrate your child’s birthday with non-food items such as stickers, washable tattoos, erasers, pencils, superballs, yoyos, coloring pencils or bookmarks. Another option is to make a donation to your child’s classroom in your child’s name! Teachers appreciate donations of books, jump ropes, hula hoops, basketballs, footballs, nerf balls and board games.
Dress Code
Parents should assume responsibility for seeing that students arrive at school properly dressed. Short shorts, tube tops, and bare midriffs are not permitted at Nesbit. For safety reasons, please wear appropriate play shoes; no flip-flops, high heels or backless shoes. Tank tops must have straps at least 1” wide (no halter tops). Clothing with inappropriate messages is not allowed. Hats may not be worn inside school buildings.
Electronics
Students are not permitted to bring electronics such as radios, CD players, iPODs, video games, cell phones, etc. on campus. If they are seen or heard, they will be confiscated and held in the office until a parent picks them up.
Home/School Communication
Parent Participation
Your active participation helps make our school a more productive and enjoyable experience for both you and your child. At home, you can be involved by reading to your child, discussing daily assignments, helping with homework, and being interested in what your child is learning. At school, you can be involved in many different ways such as being a class volunteer, joining the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), or serving on the School Site Council (SSC). Parent representatives are sometimes needed on Belmont-Redwood Shores School District’s committees as well. We also use parent volunteers to help in our after-school Homework Center. We invite you to share any special talents or interests you have with the school. You can be assured that we will welcome you and will keep you informed of your child’s progress.
Parent Communication
Each Wednesday, your child will bring home a packet with information and fliers about upcoming PTA and community activities. Please take the time to read through the information carefully and return the folder with your child by the end of the week. Nesbit sends out information and reminders over e-mail. To receive these e-mails, please sign up for our Yahoo group by sending and e-mail to: nesbitelementary-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Please include your child’s name in the e-mail. Additionally, you can subscribe to our Facebook account. The best way to find our Facebook account is to go to our school website (http://nesbit.brssd.org) and use the link that is on the home page.
Conferences with teachers
We suggest you make an appointment if you wish to talk with the teacher about your child’s progress. During the time that students are present (including directly before and after school), the teacher is not available for conferencing. Conferences regarding your child’s academic progress will be held November 15-22 and again in the spring, March 6-13. Kindergarten conferences are held in November and May. Please contact your child’s teacher if a conference is needed at another time.
Calls to the school
Please feel free to call the school with concerns, questions or compliments. If you need to speak to your child’s teacher during school hours, please leave a voice mail with your name, number, and times when you can best be reached for a return call. Teachers are not available during school hours but will get back to you before or after school.
Emergency phone calls
In case of illness or injury to your child, we must have current emergency phone numbers on file in the office. If your home or work numbers change, please notify the office right away. The school telephone is not available for use by students except for emergency purposes.
Other Parent Information
Please be sure to sign in at the office anytime you are on the campus during school hours. If you are dropping off a lunch, homework, etc. during the school day, please bring it to the office so that classroom instruction is not disrupted.

Arrivals
Students begin school at 8:25 each day (8:10 or 12:00 for Kindergarten). 1st – 5th grade children arriving on campus before 8:10 should report directly to the office, as there is no adult supervision on the campus at that time. Students may be on the playground after 8:10. At 8:25, a bell will ring and students will line up on the blacktop with their classes. Any student arriving after 8:25 must stop in the office for a tardy slip.
Dismissals
Kindergarten dismissal is at 12:20 daily. Students in grades 1-3 are dismissed at 2:35 and grades 4-5 at 3:10 every day but Wednesday, when all students in grades 1-5 are dismissed at 12:20. We expect students to leave the campus immediately following school as there is no after school supervision. Students not picked up within 10 minutes of dismissal should report to the office to call home.
Bicycles
Bicycles may be ridden to school and locked in the bike rack. Bike helmets must be worn while biking, and bikes must be walked on campus. Parents should suggest the safest riding route before granting permission to bike to school. Bikes left in the rack are not the responsibility of the school.
Before and After-School Childcare
Childcare is provided by Club Puma on the Nesbit Campus. They can be reached at (650) 592-0522. Puma Cubs (infant – kdgn.) can be reached at (650) 610-0715.
Parking Lot Safety
Please drive slowly obeying the traffic patterns in the parking lots. This ensures the safety of all of our students and community. We encourage you to carpool or walk to school to reduce traffic congestion. For safety reasons, we ask you to please park off campus on neighboring streets when dropping off or picking up your child if you wish to walk them in.
School Attendance
We ask for your support in assuring that your child attends school every single day unless they are ill. Daily attendance assures that your child receives the best possible education that Nesbit can offer.
Illness
If your child is ill, you are expected to call the school office at 637-4860 ext. 2488 each day of the absence to let us know that the child will not be in school. For your children’s safety, our office staff must verify the whereabouts of the absent children and will need to reach you if you have not called in. The office is staffed between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. At all other times, an answering machine is on particularly for absence reporting. Children should not be sent to school if they are feeling ill so that they can get better and so that other children don’t get sick. Students may not come to school if they have had a fever within the past 24 hours.
Tardies
We ask that you assure that your child is at school every day on time. Tardies result in your child missing valuable classroom. Being late 5 minutes a day over the course of the school year adds up to your child missing a total of 900 minutes (or 15 hours) of instructional minutes. Families with excessive tardies will be asked to meet with principal who will help the family develop a plan that will assure on-time arrival at school.
Out of Town
If your child will not be attending school due to an out of town absence, a note must be given to the child’s teacher two weeks prior to the date of absence. Students missing more than 5 days of instruction must complete an independent study packet prepared by the child’s teacher. In addition, please notify the office of your child’s expected absence either in person or by phoning the attendance line.
Truancy
Under state regulations, a student absent three times without being excused or late three times in excess of thirty minutes is considered truant. (Note: The state allows only medical/dental appointments and illness as excused tardies.) If the truancy is not corrected, students will be referred to the district’s School Attendance Review Board (SARB). For children to receive the full benefit of their education at Nesbit, it is necessary for them to be in school daily and ready to work when class begins at 8:25. Please help us to instill good habits in your child.
Appointments
We encourage you to make appointments for your children outside regular school hours if at all possible. If it is necessary for you to remove your child from school, please come first to the office to sign out your child. The child must be signed out by an adult (parent or someone authorized on the emergency card) and signed back in upon arrival back at school.
Homework During Absences
Requests for homework should be left with the office staff or on a teacher’s voice mail or email. Please do not interrupt classroom instruction to ask for missed assignments. Homework may be picked up in the school office.
Physical Education Instruction
Students will be excused from participation only with a written excuse from a doctor or parent.
Support Services
Student Study Team (SST)
Students needing additional academic, social or emotional support in the school setting are referred to a Student Study Team. Referrals can be made by teachers, parents, or other school personnel. The Student Study Team consists of the child’s teacher, the child’s parents, and other school personnel including but not limited to the school counselor, psychologist, resource teacher, and/or school climate facilitator. The students’ strengths and areas of concern are listed, as well as pertinent family or health information. The team works together to develop strategies and interventions to help the student become more successful at school.
Special Education Services
The Belmont-Redwood Shores School District assesses students who it reasonably suspects have a disability and are in need of special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. If you believe that your student has a disability that gives rise to a need for special education services, please contact the school principal to discuss the matter.
In order for children to qualify for special education testing, parents must give written permission for testing. After testing, test results will be shared. Services are offered at the school by the learning center teacher, as well as the school psychologist, counselor, and speech therapist. Students with exceptional needs are served within the regular classroom to the maximum extent possible in accordance with state and federal guidelines and school district policy.
Academic Intervention Programs
Nesbit has two full time staff members who do academic intervention programs in Reading Instruction and English Language Development. In addition, an after school homework center is available to assist students with homework.
Family Engagement Specialist
Nesbit is fortunate to have a Family Engagement Specialist contracted through Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center. This specialist is available to help parents become more involved in their child’s academic career, to help parents navigate the educational system, and to help Spanish speaking parents communicate with the school. The goals of the specialist are to increase the frequency of parent/guardian involvement at school, increase the quality of parent/guardian involvement, increase parent/guardian attendance and comfort at schools, and to help parent/guardian understand the school system as well as support services available to families.
School Site Council
The School Site Council (SSC) exists so that individuals most affected by the operation of the school have a role in how their school functions. Comprised of five staff members and five parent/community members, the SSC concentrates on improving the academic environment at Nesbit. The SSC is responsible for the development of the school improvement plan, including a budget, which is reflective and supportive of the plan, the review of the implementation of the plan, and the assessment of the effectiveness of the plan. Nominations and volunteers for participation on the SSC are accepted in the spring. Members serve a two year term. Meetings are open to anyone interested in attending. For more information, contact the school.
Safety and Security at Nesbit
Care of Injuries
If at any time your child is injured at school, s/he should report the incident immediately to his/her teacher or the adult on duty. School personnel will administer first aid in the case of minor injuries. Follow-up care of injuries occurring at school is the responsibility of parents or guardians.
Closed Campus
Nesbit is a closed campus. Students remain on school grounds from the time they arrive in the morning until they are dismissed in the afternoon, unless a parent has notified the office otherwise. Children who do not participate in after school activities should go home directly after dismissal as there is no adult supervision on the yard after school.
Emergency Cards
In case of serious injury or illness, the school will notify parents or guardians by telephone. At the beginning of each school year, parents and guardians must fill out an Emergency Card. Please notify the school secretary immediately of any changes to the card.
Medication
No medication, prescription or non-prescription, may be administered by school personnel without written approval from a physician and parent. School office personnel will assist in dispensing medication when appropriate forms and the medication in their original containers are provided. Students are not to have inhalers, pills or other medication in their possession (including cough drops.) All medications are to be placed in a cupboard in the office.
Releasing Children During the School Day
During the school day, children will only be released to parents, guardians or those listed on the Emergency Card. If you are in need of someone other than you to pick up your child, please send in a signed note or call the school.
Visitors on Campus
Our hope at Nesbit is that all family members feel welcomed and included. We encourage families to visit Nesbit and volunteer as often as possible. We also ask that all visitors, volunteers and family members check-in to the office upon arrive at the school so that we may give you a Visitor’s Sticker. Assuring the safety of our children is one of Nesbit’s highest priorities. By actively working to know who is on our campus at all times, the Nesbit Staff will be best able to assure the safety of the children.
Disaster Preparedness Information
Nesbit School has plans for responding to emergency situations such as earthquakes, chemical spills, power failures, fires, civil disturbances, and any other event that interrupts regular school activity.
Should an emergency occur, the safety of students is our primary objective. We ask your help in following the guidelines listed below.
1. No student will be dismissed from school unless a parent (or individual previously designated by a parent) comes to school for him/her.
2. No student will be allowed to leave school with any person, even a relative or babysitter, unless that particular person is listed on the student’s emergency card. Please make sure that your child’s emergency card always has current information.
3. Do not call the school. We must have the lines open for emergency calls. Also, we may not be in the office if we have had to evacuate the building.
4. If we need to contact you about the situation at school, PTA will initiate a phone tree.
5. As soon as possible, come to school to pick up your child and any other children for whom you are the emergency card designee.
6. Park on the streets. Leave the driveway and parking areas clear for emergency vehicles.
7. If there is a need to evacuate, we would be at St. Mark’s Church, 325 Marine View Way or at Central Elementary School, 525 Middle Road.
8. Remain calm. We will stay with your child(ren) and keep them safe for however long it takes to reunite them with you.
**If you would like to review our complete Emergency Response Plan, it is available in the office.
Parents will be asked to supply a non-perishable snack for their child’s emergency kit.
