Building Character Traits

In addition to learning reading, writing, math, and all of the other academic subjects taught at Nesbit, students are learning important life skills that will help them to get along with others and feel better about themselves.

Each month during the school year we focus on a different character trait from the Six Pillars of Character: Responsibility, Respect, Caring, Trustworthiness, Fairness, and Citizenship. Students will learn about each of these traits and how they apply to their lives.

The Character Trait for January is

 Fairness

January - Fairness

In January, we focus on fairness. We encourage students to play fair and treat each other fairly.

February/March - Caring

In February and March, we focus on caring. We encourage students to be caring towards one another and to show that they care about the world around them.

April - Trustworthiness

In April we focus on trustworthiness. We encourage students to be trustworthy by being honest and dependable to their peers, teachers and families.

May - Citizenship

In May, we focus on citizenship. We encourage students to be good citizens by putting together all of the traits we have learned this year; being responsible, respectful, fair, caring and trustworthy. Good citizens care for the world around them and the people in their community.

June - Over all good character

At our last Monday Morning Meeting of the year, students who have demonstrated strong character muscles all year long will be awarded a special certificate for their efforts.

September - Conflict resolution

In September, we have a school-wide focus on Conflict Resolution skills. Students learn five important steps to resolving a conflict; Stop, Cool off, Talk and listen to each other, Brainstorm solutions, and Agree on the idea you both like best.

October - Responsibility

In October, we focus on building responsibility. Students spend a lot of time at the beginning of each school year learning to be responsible about their homework, getting to class on time, making responsible choices throughout their day, and taking responsibility for their actions.

November/December - Respect

In November and December, we focus on respect. We encourage students to be respectful to their peers, adults, the earth, and most of all, themselves.
