Books and decorations were up this month for National Poetry Month, Passover, Easter, Earth Day, and TV Turn-off Week. The silkworms hatched and classes have been watching them grow. Also this month my cockatiel, Jewel, came to visit on a Monday and Friday so students in rooms 7, 9, 16, 14, 10, 19, 6, and 11 got to hold him if they wanted and we captured some fun photos.
In honor of National Poetry Month the Poetry Box came out at recess and students have been creating interesting phrases. Also I’ve been “reading a quilt” to the classes. Several years ago I found some great pizza fabric and created a quilt with Jack Prelutsky’s poem written on it: I’m Making a Pizza the Size of the Sun. It’s a large wall hanging and I sent a photo of it to Mr. Prelutsky shortly after making it. He sent a letter and package of goodies back! Now I encourage any student who loves a book to write to the author and tell them.

Decorations and books were up this month for Woman’s History, Spring, St. Patrick’s Day, National Quilt Day (March 21st), and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. Sewing fabric bookmarks and leprechaun pillows was the lunch recess activity this month. Ilana Hamer was the guest Librarian for the Day (auction winner) one Monday. She did an outstanding job of reading to the classes and checking out books. Niklas Roberts was the auction winner of the Quilt Class and he invited his buddy Jonathan Trier to join him.

Decorations and books up for this month for Black History Month, Groundhog Day, Valentine’s, Chinese New Year, Mardi Gras, and President’s Day. Some pictures of the many decorations for this month are shown here.
What fun we had at the Multicultural Pot Luck and Silent Auction. The Yonts family was the winners of the book Linda Satkowski and I made titled, Read Anything Good at Nesbit School Lately? The Roberts family won the Quilt Class and Ilana Hamer will be Librarian for a Day. Thank you all for your support.
Did you know that students help put books away at recess and earn points which then are used to buy prizes? Without these great student helpers the re-shelving cart would be overflowing… It’s fun to see a child sitting down to read a book they were planning to reshelf but it was just too good not to open up and read. The students are also learning good library skills! So if you see little prizes coming home you’ll know that your child is one of the recess helpers.
January 2009 News
January was a busy time in the library. Decorations/books were up for New Year's, Dr. Martin Luther King, visiting Washington, D.C., and Chinese New Year. In fact the entire display case was devoted to Chinese New Year.

We started reading the books nominated for the California Young Reader Medal Award. Five books will be read across the state to California children who will then vote on their favorite from: Hilda Must Be Dancing, Bats at the Beach, Uncle Peter's Amazing Chinese Wedding, Stanley's Wild Ride, and The Perfect Nest. 4th and 5th graders will also hear a selection of picture books for older readers which are: Brothers, Pop's Bridge, and Mystery at the Club Sandwich. There are some good books this year!

This month was a busy one! In honor of Native American month a quiet reading tepee was set up along with decorations/books up for Voting, Thanksgiving, Veterans Day and two Fall leaf wall hanging quilts.

Award winning guest author, Matthew Gollub, gave two dynamic assemblies and a writing workshop with the upper grades. The students were tickled to hear that he spent the night before his presentation at my house! Then the library was closed on a Friday so that I could attend a California School Library Association Conference in Sacramento where I attended many great workshops and saw more outstanding authors and illustrators including Rosemary Wells!
Finally my cockatiel, Jewel, came to visit on a Tuesday and met with all the classes that come to the library on that day. The students who made quilts after school in the library this month included Prapti, Teyva, Gabrielle, Harley, Vlad, and Dylan J.

Books and decorations were up this month for Yom Kippur, Columbus Day, Halloween, Diwali, and Day of the Dead. The students were lucky enough to have Mr. Stone supervise the owl pellet dissection again at lunch recess.

The kindergarteners were studying spiders so I shared, Shadow, the resident tarantula with each class. The students also got to see her molted skin from previous years. It’s amazing that they molt fangs, eyes, mouth, and everything. Earlier in the month I brought my very tame cockatiel, to share with students who came in for library time on a Wednesday. It’s been a busy month!

This month in the library we reviewed book care and library behavior by reading a take-off from the very popular No, David! series. This is a book students helped me create a few years ago called David Goes to the Library. The students are reminded that they are responsible for the books they check out and if the book gets lost or ruined while checked out they need to pay a replacement fee of $17 for a hardcover book and $7 for a paperback. Kindergarteners not only learned about book care but they learned how to use a shelf marker when looking for books so they know where to return the book if it’s not the one they want to check out.
At recess we have enthusiastic library helpers who have eagerly been earning points by re-shelving books. With the points they are able to earn prizes. (If you ever have any prize-worthy trinkets at home that you’d like to get rid of we can always use them! Just bring them to the office or the library). |
