Parent Participation: Your active parent participation helps make our school a more productive and enjoyable experience for both you and your child. At home, you can be involved by reading to your child, discussing daily class work and assignments, helping with homework, and being interested in what your child is learning. At school you can be involved by being a parent volunteer, a room parent, by working with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), by joining the School Site Council (SSC). Parent representatives are sometimes needed on Belmont-Redwood Shores School District's committees as well. We also use parent volunteers to help in our after-school Homework Center. We invite you to share any special talents or interests you have with the school. You can be assured that we welcome you as partners in your child's education and will keep you informed of your child's progress.
Parent Communication: Each Wednesday, your child will bring home a packet with information and fliers about upcoming PTA and community activities. Please take the time to read through the information carefully and return the folder with your child by the end of the week. Nesbit sends out information and reminders over e-mail. To receive these e-mails, please sign up for our Yahoo group by sending and e-mail to: nesbitelementary-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Please include your child's name in the e-mail.
Conferences with teachers: We suggest you make an appointment if you wish to talk with the teacher about your child's progress. During the time that student are present (including directly before and after school), the teacher is not available for conferencing. Conferences regarding your child's academic progress will be held November 18-25 and again in the spring, March 10-17. Kindergarten conferences are held in November and May. Please contact your child's teacher if a conference is needed at another time.
Calls to the school: Please feel free to call the school with concerns, questions or compliments. If you need to speak to your child's teacher during school hours, please leave a voice mail with your name, number, and times when you can best be reached for a return call. Teachers are not available during school hours but will get back to you before or after school.
Medication: No medication, prescription or non-prescription, may be administered by school personnel without written approval from a physician and parent. School office personnel will assist in dispensing medication when appropriate forms and the medication in their original containers are provided. Students are not to have inhalers, pills or other medication in their possession (including cough drops.) All medications are to be placed in a cupboard in the office.
Arrivals: Students
Dismissals: Kindergarten dismissal is at 12:45 daily. Students in grades 1-3 are dismissed at 2:35 and grades 4-5 at 3:10 every day but Wednesday, when all students in grades 1-5 are dismissed at 12:20. We expect students to leave the campus immediately following school, as there is no after school supervision. Students not picked up within 10 minutes of dismissal should report to the office to call home.
Bicycles: Bicycles may be ridden to school and locked in the bike rack. Bike helmets must be worn while biking, and bikes must be walked on campus. Parents should suggest the safest riding route before granting permission to bike to school. Bikes left in the rack are not the responsibility of the school.
Parking Lot Safety: The PTA provides volunteers to help with safety patrol. Please drive slowly obeying the traffic patterns in the parking lots. This ensures the safety of all of our students and community. We encourage you to carpool or walk to school to reduce traffic congestion. For safety reasons , we ask you to please park off campus on neighboring streets when dropping off or picking up your child if you wish to walk them in.
Other Parent Information: Please be sure to sign in at the office anytime you are on the campus during school hours. If you are dropping off a lunch, homework, etc. during the school day, please bring it to the office so that classroom instruction is not disrupted.
